26 years before the birth of the MAD magazine, a humour magazine took root in Tamil Nadu by the name Ananda Vikatan. Ever since that pioneering moment, there’s been no looking back for the Vikatan Group.
Founded by the visionary media mogul SS Vasan, who was also the auteur behind the biggest blockbusters in India during the independence era, the Vikatan Group has always been at the forefront of entertaining and enlightening Tamilians with its own brand of trenchant trademark wit.
Some of the biggest doyens of Tamil literature & art made their name with Ananda Vikatan including legends like Kalki Krishnamurthi, Devan, Sujatha and Shilpi, just to name a few.
With a potent mix of jokes, serialized stories, movie critiques, Q&As, essays and human interest features, Ananda Vikatan achieved a larger than life stature in the lives of every filter coffee drinking household worth its sugar.
The House of 9 Magazines
Over the years, when the Vikatan Group discovered a content gap for news behind the news that appears in dailies, Junior Vikatan was born. The refreshing scoops and bold investigative stories of Junior Vikatan made it the darling of the newsstands.
Aval Vikatan was another breath of fresh air that created a whole new category of endearingly-friendly, progressive-minded publications targeted at the contemporary woman. 14 years after its launch, Aval is still the reigning queen of women’s periodicals.
The juggernaut of innovations rolled on with the unveiling of Chutti Vikatan (the first ever tween magazine in Tamil), Naanayam Vikatan (the uniquely conceived personal finance guide), Shakti Vikatan (a fresh voice in the space of divine fortnightlies), Motor Vikatan (the innovative automobile monthly), Pasumai Vikatan (the eminently readable fortnightly that focuses on issues that concern the rural High Networth Individual) and the soon-to-be-launched Doctor Vikatan (the health magazine for every health buff).
The entire thrust of Vikatan has been to create a global base of Tamilians who will spend for quality. That’s why almost all of Vikatan’s offerings are priced substantially higher than competition.
Thinking Digital Way Before Others
At Vikatan, the credo has always been to keep innovating without ever compromising on quality – to the reader or to the advertiser.
With this as our guiding principle, we launched the first ever web site for premium Tamil content. Set up in 1997 with the intent of providing the most trusted news and current affairs, Vikatan.com has today emerged as the first port of call for the global Tamilian craving for crisp updates from his homeland.
Our unique format of serving online versions of our immensely popular magazines for a small subscription fee has helped us earn over 100 million page views a year. For a pay site in India, such numbers are truly unprecedented.
The eZine versions of Vikatan are today accessible even on iPhone & Android!
India’s Lead Player in TV Content
Vikatan Group made its foray into Television in 1998 by establishing Vikatan Tele Vistas (VTV). What began as a tiny venture to create a weekly half-hour serial ‘Akshaya’ rapidly grew into the largest and most profitable fiction houses in the country across Indian languages.
Within a short span of a decade, VTV has produced three blockbuster Tamil serials – ‘Kolangal’ (2003-2009, 1533 episodes which was remade in Kannada, Bangali and Hindi ), ‘Thendral’ (2009 onwards, Tamil, about 500 episodes and running, remade in Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam ) and has recently launched a late night show ‘Azhagi’ on Sun TV, totaling about 4000 hours of original content under its belt and adding 25 hours a week from 10 shows, broadcasting everyday on 6 channels including Star Plus and Zee TV, including licensing and co-production arrangements.
Vikatan Televistas has also produced 2 feature films in Tamil, of which its debut film, ‘SMS’ was a sleeper hit, especially among the youth. Many more potential blockbusters are in the making.
The thing that generates stickiness and diehard loyalty for the Vikatan Group is the relentless journey of new initiatives straddling Print, Web & Television. Here’s a little summary of what we’ve done over the years:
A lot more exciting launches and initiatives are in the pipeline for connecting with the Smarter Tamilian.
