Look at these in world map - From TNPSC to USPC

We are now going to look at the final topics in geography, which is a subject that can well be our trump card in competitive examinations. The first topic we shall see today is Earth’s atmosphere. Make a table and learn about the contents of the atmosphere from Nitrogen which forms the highest (78.08%) percentage to Hydrogen which forms the lowest (0.00005%) percentage. Similarly the layers of the atmosphere, namely the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, ionosphere, etc., need to be essentially studied.

Air pressure, how it is formed, its distribution across the planet, etc., need to be studied as well. The terminologies in this topic are highly important.

Sample terms : cyclone, anticyclone, coriolis force, Ferrell’s law, westerlies. Similarly the names of winds and air pressure systems in each location is very important.

Sample question

Statement I Mistral is a cold wind that blows in Spain and France.

Statement II Sirocco denotes the wind that starts in China and ends in Europe.

1 is correct ( answer )

2 is correct

Both are correct

Both are wrong

Sirocco is the wind that begins in Sahara desert and blows till Europe.

Next we shall look at rainfall. Rainfall, its types, jet streams - the special term for narrow bands of fast flowing winds, El Niño, La Niña, etc., need to be learned. Cyclones - their types 1. Temperate cyclones - mostly originating from north and south poles, 2. Tropical cyclones - originating between Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn. Learn all details of these cyclones which travel at 180 km/hour. Also, learn the names and details of all cyclones that occur around the world in your examination year.

Our next topic is the world climate and its types 1. Equatorial climate, 2. Tropical savannah climate Sudan type 3. Tropical monsoon climate 4. Tropical / sub tropical desert climate 5. Mediterranean climate 6.  Steppe type climate 7. Sub tropical humid climate 8. Cool temperate British type 10. Cool temperate continental 10. Cool temperate eastern margin 11. Arctic / polar type - for each of these learn the locations where they are found - mostly the questions will be about the locations only.

Next topic is seas and oceans. Firstly scan the world map and study the locations of all seas and oceans in the world. Similarly rivers, lakes, etc., need to be learned as per their continent / country, with all details such as biggest, smallest, etc., in tables. As with India, water resources of the world as a whole also should be learned.

Sample question

Statement I Amazon river originated in Andes mountains.

Statement II Tigris river flows through Iran.

Statement III Strait of Gibraltar lies between Morocco and Spain.

1 only is correct

1 and 3 are correct ( answer )

1 and 2 are correct

All are correct

Tigris river flows through Iran, Turkey and Syria.

As we had told about the map of India in the previous week, the world map also has to be purchased or drawn subject-wise, and whenever you get time, take a trip around the world looking at these maps! Then you will realise how easy world geography is!

Let us meet in the next topic.
