Many people suffer from sinus, asthma, cold, fever, nose block, breathing difficulty, frontal headache, running nose, low body temperature and body ache etc. during winter and rainy seasons. Normally, People who have less immunity level or take less intake of food or/and lack nutrients in food suffer from the above common ailments. Owing to these, certain toxic substances will continue to stay in our body in the long time. It is, therefore, necessary for us to clear out these toxic substances from our body for which yoga and kriya practices will be very helpful. We shall see how these yoga and kriya methods of breathing exercises and postures will help us overcome these problems in the foregoing essay.
Kapalapathi Kriya Practice:
This particular exercise is practised in order to flush out all toxic substances from our lungs. For this, we have to inhale and exhale slowly through our nose @ 120 times per minute. This will help us clear out all accumulated toxic substances. One can do this exercise for 10 to 15 minutes and this will particularly help people who suffer from continued cold and breathing difficulty.
Jalanethi Kriya Practice:-
As shown in the above picture, this must be done with the help of jalanethi jug. Initially, we must fill this mug with warm water and slowly pour through one nostril. It will come out through the other nostril automatically. One time through each nostril would do. A little salt can be added with water. This will cure nose block, cold and sneeze. This exercise, if done once a week regularly, will cure sinus and asthma over a period of time.
Both these kriya exercises are simple to follow. However, it is better that one learns this from a yoga practitioner and then practises once or twice under his guidance so that it is done properly and perfectly. Nethi and dhouti exercises are capable of treating breathing and lung problems. Apart from these, some breathing exercises such as Bhastrika pranayamam, Nadi suddhi pranayamam and Bhramari pranayamam are also available.
We should sit on the floor over a seat with the head, neck and back straight and erect with eyes closed. Arms should be straight. We must breathe in and out fast for 10 times and like this we must repeat thrice a day. This process will help us remove the phlegm from the lungs. Those who find it difficult to breathe through their noses can also follow this exercise so that it will be possible for them to breathe through their noses in due course. Lung problem will get over with the help of this exercise.
Nadi suddhi Pranayamam:-
This exercise can be done by any age group of people. This will help one improve his immunity level and lung function better. The process is that we must fold our index and middle fingers and keep our thumb on the right nostril with our ring finger on the left nostril. The left nostril must be closed. Now, we must inhale through our left nostril and exhale through our right nostril. This process should be repeated alternatively for 20 times. Overall, this will improve our lung capacity very much.
By this process, we must use our respective index fingers to close our ears on each side. Now, we must inhale firmly and exhale with uttering M.kara sound. This must be repeated 10 times. We will feel more energetic with great relief from throat problems. It will also improve our immunity level. Throat hoarseness and cold will also be removed.
In addition to the above, we can do Suriya Namaskar, Margari Asanam, Vyakarasanam, Parvathasanam, Shashangasasanam, Padmasanam etc. which are all treated as yoga practices. These yoga exercises are capable of treating lung and breathing problems to a great extent. Above all, they will strengthen our body.
The above-cited breathing and kriya exercises are simple, economical, non-technical and very valuable without any side effects.
